Virgin Australia Supercars Sydney 500 for 2016
Job Done! With the conclusion of the Virgin Australia Supercars Coates Hire Sydney 500 at Sydney Olympic Park my 2016 motorsport season comes to a close.
The Sydney 500 wasn’t just the end of a season, it was the end of era. With the season finale moving to Newcastle in 2017, it was the last time we’d take to the streets of Sydney Olympic Park for a Supercars event.
I’m the first person to admit that the Homebush layout wasn’t really ideal for spectators. Some of the best sections of the track were quite limited in access. But it was a fantastic drivers circuit and it offered some unique and interesting photographic opportunities. I’ve always found it fitting that the Supercars Champion was crowned the at the former Olympic venue.
That said, I’m really looking forward to heading to Newcastle in 2017. Being based on the Central Coast (directly between Sydney and Newcastle). The Newcastle race will be the closest thing I have to a local race. Even though it’ll be roughly the same distance that it was to Homebush, it’s still closer than Sydney Motorsport Park.
Having been to Newcastle many times and looking at the track layout. The new track should offer some fantastic photo opportunities. I can see it being a highlight of the 2017 season already. Should be a rewarding way to finish up next year.
My Favourite Photo from the Virgin Australia Supercars Sydney 500
The photo itself is a fairly standard start shot. But I chose this particular shot as it’s a good way finalize the year. With the venue, liveries, drivers and so many other things set to change during the off-season. This shot something that I won’t be able to capture again.
That’s one of the great things about photos. It’s a moment in time (well in this case 1/1000th of second to be exact) that can never truly be repeated. I think it’s a good way to bid farewell to photographing the Homebush street circuit.
I also capture plenty of action during the Supercars at Homebush, so below are a selection of my favourite shots from the weekend. If you’d like to check out some of the work I delivered to my customers or a small gallery of the photos I took during the support categories, head on over to my Facebook page.
And then just like that, not only is the Virgin Australia Supercars championship finished for the year, so are all of my motorsport commitments for 2016. That said, I’m already gearing up for a big 2017 so if you’d like to know more about my photo and media packages, or any of the other services I provide.
