G’day! I got to try my hand at something a bit different over the weekend. I headed up to Newcastle Surfest 2016 for my first real attempt photographing a surfing.
With big swell forecast and world-class names like Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Alana Blanchard competing, I thought it was the ideal time to test myself by photographing a different sport, and make my debut as a surf photographer. I actually made the decision early Saturday morning to head up to Newcastle to capture some of the action from Surfest 2016.
With the drive up to Newcastle, I missed some of the earlier heats, but I did arrive in time to catch all of 6 times world champions Stephanie Gilmore’s heat and it was impressive to see what she managed to achieve. The waves weren’t quite as big as predicted, but the sea was very rough making it a challenge for all the competitors. Here’s a couple of photos from Stephanie Gilmore’s heat.
Here’s a couple more photos from the rest of my time up at Surfest 2016. It was good to see such a strong crowd up there lining the beach.
That wraps up my favourite photos from Newcastle Surfest for 2016. I’m always on the look out for new opportunities to challenge myself and photograph new sports. If you’re on the look out for a sport photographer, definitely get in touch, I’ve got a wide variety of sporting interests, not just motorsport.
